Wise Men

  • Wise Men, or Magi, from the east saw a special star in the sky and new it marked the birth of a new king. They set off on a voyage of discovery to find this king.

Star of Bethlehem

  • The Wise Men arrived at King Herod's palace in Jerusalem and asked him where the new king could be found. They had seen his star and followed it. Herod asked his priests and teachers to explain. His advisers told him that the star fulfilled a prophecy about a leader, born in Bethlehem of Judea, who would lead his people. Herod sent the Wise Men to Bethlehem. 
  • This part of the Wise Men's story is found in Matthew, chapter 2, verses 1 to 9.
  • Stars are also found in the stories of God's promise to Abraham, Joseph's dream which upset his brothers and Job's observation of the constellation.

Gifts

  • The Wise Men followed the star to a house in Bethlehem. When they entered the house and saw Jesus with his mother, Mary, they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they presented Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
  • This part of the Wise Men's story is found in Matthew, chapter 2, verses 8 to 11.
  • Gold is also found in the stories of Aaron's calf statue, the Ark of the Covenant and the elaborate decorations in Solomon's Temple.

King Herod

  • The Wise Men first visited King Herod at his palace in Jerusalem because that is where they thought the new king would be found. Herod was upset at the news and asked the Wise Men to come back after they found the location of the child. The Magi were warned of Herod's evil plan and went home a different way. Herod was furious and ordered all the young boys in Bethlehem to be killed hoping one of them might be Jesus.
  • This part of the Wise Men's story is found in Matthew, chapter 2, verses 11 to 26.
  • King Herod's son, Herod Antipas, is found in the story of Mary's and Joseph's return from exile; while another son, Herod Tetrarch, is found in the story of John the Baptist's execution and Jesus' trial.
