Samson's mum did not expect to have children so she was really pleased when an angel told her she would have a son. As a thank you to God, she agreed to bring the boy up as a Nazarite. His life would be dedicated to God and his hair would not be cut. Samson grew up strong and brave but very reckless.

One day, Samson was attacked by a lion, which he killed with his bare hands (see David for image of lion). Later, he discovered bees making honey inside the body of the dead animal. He created a riddle about the event and made a bet that no-one could solve it, but he was tricked into giving the answer. In a rage, he stormed off to cause more havoc.
This part of Samson's story is found in Judges, chapter 14, verses 5 to 19.

Samson regularly got into fights with the Philistine clan. On one occasion, he tied foxes together, lit their tails and chased them through the wheat field and olive groves burning all the crops. On another, he killed 1,000 Philistines using a donkey's jawbone as a club.

Samson's lover, Delilah, desperately tried to discover the secret of his great strength. He temporarily lost his strength when Delilah sneakily arranged for his hair to be cut while he slept. Samson was captured, blinded and imprisoned. While in captivity, his hair grew back and he regained his strength. His final act was to demolish the temple, crushing his enemies and himself.
This part of Samson's story is found in Judges, chapter 16, verses 5 to 31.
