King Herod was persecuting the Christians. Peter had been arrested and locked up in prison (see Peter for image of Peter). He was placed in an inner cell with guards at every door. Herod wanted to put him on trial.

Prisoners are also found in the stories of Samson's crushing death, Daniel in the lions' den, Legion's unsuccessful confinement and Barabbas' release at Jesus' trial.

One night, while Peter was asleep, with armed guards all around him, an angel appeared and woke him up. Peter's chains fell off and he simply walked out of the jail past all the guards. At the end of the street, the angel left him.

As soon as Peter realised what was happening, he went straight to Mary's house where his friends were praying for his safe release. When he knocked at the door, servant girl Rhoda recognised his voice but left him standing outside. She told the people in the house that Peter was outside but they did not believe her at first. Peter kept on knocking and they were amazed to discover that it was really him. It wasn't a happy ending for the guards when Herod learnt what had happened to his prize prisoner.
