Potiphar was captain of Pharaoh's guard. He bought Joseph as a slave to work in his house. Joseph was so dutiful and efficient that he soon became head of the household, managing the daily running of everything.

Potiphar's wife saw that Joseph was young and handsome. One day, while here husband was away, she invited Joseph into her bedroom where she hoped to seduce him. Joseph knew that he shouldn't be there so he ran from the room leaving his coat behind.

Potiphar's wife grabbed Joseph's coat as he fled. When her husband returned, she claimed that Joseph had tried to force himself on her. Enraged by Joseph's betrayal of his trust, Potiphar ordered him thrown into jail.

Joseph spent years in jail but, again, his honesty helped him rise to become a prison overseer or warden. He helped the royal butler and the royal baker. Eventually he was released and given an important job by Pharaoh.
