As the number of Christians in Jerusalem increased, the church leaders appointed a group of seven men to organise the distribution of food to the poorer members of their community. Philip was one of this group, along with his friend Stephen (see Stephen for image of Stephen).

An angel told Philip to go from Jerusalem to Gaza. On the way, Philip met an Ethiopian Official who worked in the Treasury of Queen Candace. The man was sitting in his chariot at the side of the road reading a passage from the book of Isaiah - a prophet in the Old testament.

Government officials are found in the stories of Joseph organising famine relief, Daniel decoding the mysterious handwriting, Daniel's friends surviving the fiery furnace and Pontius Pilate's trial of Jesus.

Philip explained that Isaiah had been describing the coming of Jesus many years in the future. Philip told the Ethiopian Official all about the good news of Jesus, his death and resurrection. The man was amazed by the wonderful story of hope, and put his trust in Jesus.

As they travelled together, the Ethiopian Official spotted a river and stopped the chariot (see Naaman for image of river). He asked Philip to baptise him. When the man came up out of the water the Holy Spirit took Philip away. The Treasury Official continued on his journey rejoicing in the certainty of his new faith.

Chariots also appear in the stories of Pharaoh's gift to Joseph, the destruction of the Egyptian army at the Red Sea, David's mighty army, Absalom's rebellion and Ahab's unsuccessful escape.
