Pharaoh had grown concerned about the increasing number of Israelites in the country, so he ordered that all baby boys should be drowned (see Sarah for image of Pharaoh). When Moses was born, his mum Jochebed managed to hide him in the house for three months.

As Moses grew bigger, his mum made a basket and coated it with tar to make it waterproof. She placed her baby son in the basket and hid it in the reeds along the edge of the River Nile. His big sister, Miriam, watched over him to make sure he was safe.

Reeds are also found in the stories of Pharaoh's dream about the fat and thin cows, and Isaiah's prophecy against Egypt.

Pharaoh's daughter came down to the river to bathe. She saw the basket in the reeds and sent one of her servants into the water to rescue it. The baby was crying and she felt sorry for him. Miriam appeared from her hiding place and told the princess that she could find a nurse to look after the baby.

Miriam ran home and explained to her mum all that had happened. Miriam brought Jochebed to meet the princess, and she was given the job of looking after her own son. When Moses was older, his mum brought him back to Pharaoh's daughter who adopted him so he grew up in the royal palace.
