Moses' stick

  • The Israelites had been forced by the Egyptians to work as slaves. Moses (see Moses for image of Moses) and his brother Aaron were sent by God to ask Pharaoh to release the Israelites from captivity. To show Pharaoh the power of God, Moses' brother threw down his stick and it turned into a snake. The Egyptian magicians did the same but Aaron's snake swallowed up their snakes.
  • This part of Moses' story is found in Exodus, chapter 7, verses 8 to 13.
  • Snakes are also found in the stories of Eve's temptation in the Garden of Eden, the Israelites wandering about the desert and Paul's shipwreck.
  • Snakes appear in our Animal Scramble game.

Plagues 1 to 4

  • Aaron stretched out Moses' stick and the Nile, along with all the water in Egypt , turned to blood (see John the Baptist for image of river). No-one could drink the water. Next, frogs swarmed onto the land. Then the dust turned to gnats which covered the people and the animals. After that, flies filled the houses and the land. Each time, Pharaoh agreed to let the people go then changed his mind.
  • This part of Moses' story is found in Exodus, chapter 7, verse 14 to chapter 8, verse 30.
  • Frogs are also found in the story of John's vision of a false prophet.
  • Frogs appear in our Animal Scramble game.

Plagues 5 to 9

  • All the livestock in the fields belonging to the Egyptians were struck down with a terrible plague. This included the cattle, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys and camels. Festering boils broke out on the Egyptians' skin. Hail battered down the crops in the fields, as well as any people or animals caught outside. Swarms of locust devoured any crops not destroyed by the hail (see John the Baptist for image of locust). Darkness covered the land for three days and nights. Pharaoh continued to agree to let the people go then changed his mind.
  • This part of Moses' story is found in Exodus, chapter 9, verse 1 to chapter 10, verse 29.
  • Cattle are also found in the stories of Pharaoh's dream about the famine, Elijah's altar fire and the lost son's returning banquet.
  • Cattle appear in our Animal Scramble game.

Plague 10

  • Finally, Moses warned that every firstborn son and every firstborn cow in Egypt would die. God instructed the Israelites to prepare one final meal before leaving, and to paint animal blood around their door frames to identify their homes. That night, God passed through the land and struck down the Egyptians but passed over the Israelites' houses. Pharaoh finally let the Israelites leave, only to change his mind again. His army pursued them to the Red Sea where disaster awaited them.
  • This part of Moses' story is found in Exodus, chapter 11, verse 1 to chapter 12, verse 32 and again in chapter 14, verses 5 to 29.
  • Blood is found in the stories of Joseph's brothers tricking their dad, the woman who touched the hem of Jesus' cloak and Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemene.
  • Blood appears in our Numbers game; and will appear in our Gory Story game.
