Moses was born into a Hebrew family but grew up as an Egyptian prince. He fled Egypt as a young man after killing an Egyptian in a fight and escaped to the desert. He later returned to lead the Israelites out of slavery to a special land God had promised them.

Moses’ mum hid him in a basket among the reeds on the river bank to keep him safe. Pharaoh’s daughter saw the basket, felt sorry for the little boy and adopted Moses as her son. His big sister Miriam had kept watch on him and she arranged for their mum to be his nursemaid.

While Moses was watching sheep in the desert for his father-in-law, Jethro, he came across a bush full of fire that did not burn up. God spoke to Moses through the bush and told him to take off his shoes as he was standing on holy ground. God instructed Moses to return to Egypt and ask Pharaoh to set the Israelites free.

God gave Moses a special set of rules on Mount Sinai called the 10 Commandments. Moses smashed them in anger when he saw how badly the people behaved and had to get another set.
