Mary and Martha were sisters who lived in the town of Bethany with their brother Lazarus. Jesus was a friend of theirs and would often visit them at their home.

Martha was busy in the kitchen preparing food for the guests while Mary was sitting listening to Jesus. Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to help her but Jesus gently explained that what Mary was doing was very important. She was listening to the things of God.

Their brother Lazarus was seriously ill so the sisters sent for Jesus. Before Jesus arrived, Lazarus died and was buried. Mary and Martha were upset by their brother's death, and were annoyed that Jesus had not tried to get there sooner. Jesus went to the tomb where Lazarus was buried and brought him back to life. Lazarus appeared wearing all his burial clothes.

Lazarus is also the name of the beggar found in the parable of the rich man who died.
