The angel Gabriel told Mary that she had been chosen for this special role. Mary was worried about what Joseph would say so Gabriel appeared to him as well. Joseph agreed to look after Mary and the baby.

After travelling to Bethlehem for a government census, Mary gave birth to a baby son. There was no room in any inn because of the crowds arriving for the census so Jesus was born in a stable. There he was visited by local shepherds and later by wise men from the east.

Mary supported Jesus throughout his ministry. She was one of the small group of followers gathered around the cross when he was crucified. Jesus asked one of the disciples to look after his mum when he was gone.
