Lydia lived in the city of Philippi, a Roman colony and the leading city of Macedonia. Lydia was a wealthy business woman and a dealer in purple cloth. Paul (see Paul for image of Paul) and his friend Silas visited Philippi on their missionary journey to Thessalonica.
This part of Lydia's story is found in Acts, chapter 16, verses 11 to 12.

Beside the river, Paul and Silas started to talk to a group of women, including Lydia. She responded to Paul's message and was baptised, along with the rest of her family. Lydia invited Paul and Silas to stay with her while they were in Philippi.

Rivers are also found in the stories of Moses crossing the Red Sea, Joshua entering the Promised Land, General Naaman's cure for leprosy and John's baptism of Jesus.

Paul and Silas were accused of public disorder. They were stripped, beaten and locked up in jail. After they were pardoned and released from prison, they returned to Lydia's house to see their friends. Then they left the city to continue on their journey.

Prisons are also found in the stories of Joseph's encounter with the butler and the baker, John the Baptist's arrest by King Herod, Paul and Silas surviving an earthquake and Peter's release by an angel.
