Lot was Abraham's nephew and part of the large family group that set out from the city of Ur to travel to Canaan. After their herdsmen quarrelled, Lot and his uncle Abraham decided to go in different directions to find separate grazing land for their cattle, sheep and goats.
This part of Lot's story is found in Genesis, chapter 11, verses 27 to 31 and chapter 13, verses 1 to 12.

Lot moved to the city of Sodom. One day, two angels arrived while he was sitting at the city gates. He invited them to stay with him at his house for safety because a crowd of local men wanted to abuse them. The crowd tried to attack Lot but the angels blinded them.

City gates are also found in the stories of Samson's removal of the gates, Bartimaeus being healed by Jesus and Paul's plotters waiting to catch him.

The people in Sodom and the neighbouring city of Gomorrah were so wicked that God decided to destroy them. The angels warned Lot and his family to leave Sodom. At first, Lot was reluctant to leave but eventually he agreed to go. His daughter's husbands refused to go with them. The angels gave Lot, his wife and their daughters a stern warning not to look back after they had left.

As Lot and his family made their escape, God rained down fire on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. They were both completely destroyed. But Lot's wife looked back and she was turned into a pillar of salt.
