Joseph

  • Joseph was Jacob’s favourite son. He had eleven brothers and a sister. Joseph was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers. After years in prison, he rose to become the second most important man in Egypt after Pharaoh. When famine struck his home country, he was reunited with his family when they came to Egypt to buy food.
  • This part of Joseph’s story is found in the book of Genesis, chapter 37, verse 1 to chapter 47, verse 12

Coloured coat

  • Jacob gave his son Joseph a special coloured coat as a gift. When his jealous brothers sold him as a slave they killed a goat and cruelly painted blood on the coat to make their father think Joseph was dead.

  • Special coats can also be found in the stories of Samuel as a boy and John the Baptist in the wilderness

Stars

  • Joseph had a dream about the sun, moon and stars bowing down to him. The dream upset Joseph’s brothers but his father thought about the meaning for a long time.

Grain

  • Joseph explained Pharaoh’s dream about seven full, healthy heads of grain and seven thin, scorched heads of grain. He explained another dream about seven fat cows and seven thin cows. These were a warning about a famine in the future. Pharaoh was so pleased with Joseph that he put him in charge of food production for the country.
