Jonah

  • Jonah was commanded by God to go to Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian kingdom. It was a wicked place and God wanted Jonah to warn the people that He was displeased. Jonah tried to run away from the task but a series of events forced him to think again.
  • This part of Jonah’s story is found in the book of Jonah, chapter 1, verses 1 to 2.

Boats

  • Jonah did not want to go to Nineveh so he decided to run away to Tarshish which was in the opposite direction. He went to Joppa and got on a boat. After paying the fare, the boat set sail for Tarshish.
  • This part of Jonah’s story is found in the book of Jonah, chapter 1, verses 3 to 4.
  • Boats can also be found in the stories of Noah’s ark, Peter walking on water and Paul’s shipwreck.

Clouds

  • While at sea, God sent a great storm that threatened to sink the ship. The crew threw cargo overboard to lighten the load to stop it sinking. Then they found Jonah asleep below deck. Jonah told the crew the storm was his fault, and that they should throw him overboard. When they did, the storm stopped and the sea became calm.
  • This part of Jonah’s story is found in the book of Jonah, chapter 1, verses 4 to 16.

Fish

  • A great fish swallowed Jonah. Jonah prayed to God from inside the fish. On the third day, the fish spat Jonah out onto the beach. God asked Jonah again to go to Nineveh and this time he obeyed.   
  • This part of Jonah’s story is found in the book of Jonah, chapter 1, verse 7 to chapter 3, verse 3.
  • Fish can also be found in the stories of Jesus feeding the 5,000, Peter’s fishing net and Jesus cooking breakfast for the disciples.
