John the Baptist

  • John was Elizabeth's and Zechariah's son. His mum was a cousin of Mary, Jesus' mum. His dad worked as a priest in the Temple in Jerusalem. His parents were old and his dad did not believe the message from the angel Gabriel that his wife would have a baby. For not believing, Zechariah was struck dumb until the baby was born.
  • The part of John the Baptist's story is found in Luke, chapter 1, verses 5 to 25.
  • John the Baptist appears in our Scramble and 2by2 games.

Locust

  • John wandered around the countryside, teaching people about God and preparing the way for Jesus. John wore a rough coat made from camel skin tied with a leather belt. For food he ate locusts and wild honey (see Samson for image of honey).
  • This part of John the Baptist's story is found in Matthew, chapter 3, verses 1 to 6.
  • Locusts are also found in the stories of the plagues of Egypt and Job's question about what makes a horse jump. Honey is found in the story of Samson's riddle about sweetness and strength.

River

  • John baptised people in the river Jordan. He dipped them below the water to symbolise washing away their old selfish lives and being made new for God's service. One day, Jesus asked John to baptise him in preparation for his ministry.
  • This part of John the Baptist's story is found in Matthew , chapter 3, verses 13 to 17.
  • Rivers are also found in the stories of Moses parting the Red Sea, Joshua crossing the river Jordan, Naaman bathing and Lydia washing her clothes. 
  • Rivers don't appear in any Lootro games yet but watch this space for news.

Dove

  • As John did so, the sky opened, a dove flew down and God spoke from the heavens to the crowd on the river bank. John spoke out against nasty King Herod who was living with his brothers wife, Herodias. They did not like this and John was locked up. Herodias later tricked Herod into executing John. 
  • This part of John the Baptist's story is found in Matthew, chapter 14, verses 1 to 12.
  • Doves are also found in the stories of Noah in the Ark, Solomon's love songs and Hezekiah's lament.
