James & John

  • James and John were brothers from Bethsaida, near Capernium. Like their friends Peter and Andrew, they were fishermen on Lake Galilee. They were sitting in their boats mending their fishing nets when Jesus called them to follow them.

Disciples

  • The disciples were a group of people picked by Jesus to work with him during his ministry. They were an odd mix of m en from different places and with various jobs and skills. After Jesus ascended into heaven, they went out into the world to share his message.
  • This part of James' and John's story is found in Acts, chapter 1, verses 1 to 9.
  • The disciples are also found in the stories of Jesus' entry into Jerusalem and their shared meal together in the upper room, known as the last supper.

Fishing net

  • One day, Jesus got into Peter's boat and told him to throw out the fishing net. Peter was tired because he had been fishing all night but he did what Jesus asked. When he started to pull it in, the net was so full that it started to tear. Peter shouted for his friends James and John to help him.
  • This part of James' and John's story is found in Luke, chapter 4, verses 4 to 7.
  • Nets are also found in the stories of James' and John's call from Jesus, Solomon's fishing trip, Isaiah's hunt for antelope and Hosea's bird catching.

Tomb

  • James and John were a rowdy pair and got the nickname Sons of Thunder. Their dad, Zebedee, was a fisherman too. Their mum, Salome, was also a follower of Jesus. She was one of the women who went with Mary Magdalene to the tomb on Sunday morning to prepare Jesus' body. The tomb was empty because Jesus had risen. When the disciples heard the news, John and Peter ran to the tomb to see for themselves.
  • This part of James' and John's story is found in Mark, chapter 16, verses 1 to 8 and John, chapter 20, verses 1 to 10.
  • Tombs or caves are also found in the stories of Daniel in the lions' den and Jesus' healing of Legion.
