Jairus was a synagogue leader from Galilee. When Jesus crossed the lake by boat, a large crowd gathered on the shore to hear him teach. Jairus came up to Jesus and fell at this feet.

Jairus' twelve year old daughter was seriously ill. Jairus pleaded with Jesus to come back to his house and heal the little girl. As Jesus made his way through the crowd, a sick women touched his cloak and was healed.

People healed by Jesus are also found in the stories of Blind Bartimaeus at the city gates, the paralysed man lowered through the roof and the lame man lying beside the well.

While Jesus was still speaking to the crowd, someone came from Jairus' house to tell him the sad news that his daughter had died. Jesus went to the house with his disciples Peter, James and John. At the house, the family were very upset at the girl's death. Jesus told them not to worry because she was only sleeping.

Jesus, his disciples and the girl's parents went into her room. Jesus took the girl's hand and instructed her to get up. Immediately she stood up and began to walk around. Everyone was astonished that Jesus had power over death.
