Jesus told a story about a man who was robbed on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. A priest and a Levite came along but chose to ignore the injured man. Both were hurrying to their work in the Temple and did not want to stop.

Along came a Samaritan man. The Jews and the Samaritans did not like each other but this Samaritan did not think about who the injured man was or where he came from before he stopped. He cleaned the man's wounds with oil and bandaged his injuries.

The Samaritan paid the innkeeper two coins and asked him to look after the injured man. He also promised that if the innkeeper needed more money to care for the patient then he would pay the rest on his next visit. For his kindness, the traveller has always been known as the Good Samaritan.
