Gideon

  • Gideon was secretly threshing corn in a wine press to hide it from the Midianite tribe. An angel came and sat down under an oak tree and challenged him to lead his people against the Midianites. Gideon was unsure so decided to test God, twice, with a sheep's fleece.
  • This part of Gideon's story is found in Judges, chapter 6, verses 11 to 16.

Sword

  • Gideon raised a huge army but there were far too many for the task God had in mind. 22,000 went home and 10,000 remained but this was still too many. Gideon told them to drink at the river and only kept those who cupped the water in their hand and lapped it like a dog. They were chosen because they had kept hold of their weapons. With a force of 300, and some strange provisions, Gideon set off to fight the Midianites.
  • This part of Gideon's story is found in Judges, chapter 7, verses 1 to 8.
  • Swords are also found in the stories of Adam's and Eve's eviction from the Garden of Eden, Judge Eglon's assassination of evil King Ehud, David's final act against Goliath and John's defence of Jesus at Gethsemene.

Jars

  • Gideon split his army into three parts and gave each soldier a trumpet and an empty clay jar with a flaming torch inside it (see Peter for image of fire). This was to make sure the light could not be seen. The soldiers crept to the edge of the Midianite camp.
  • This part of Gideon's story is found in Judges, chapter 7, verses 8 to 16.
  • Jars are also found in the stories of the Israelites collecting manna, Elijah's burnt offering and Jesus' first miracle at the wedding feast at Cana.
  • Jars appear in our Numbers game.

Trumpet

  • On Gideon's command, the soldiers blew their trumpets and smashed the jars to make a noise and reveal the torches, then charged the enemy. The cried "A sword for the Lord and for Gideon". The surprise and ferocity of the attack resulted in a complete victory. Gideon ruled as a Judge of Israel and his people had peace for 40 years.
  • This part of Gideon's story is found in Judges, chapter 7, verses 17 to 23 and verse 28.
  • Trumpets are also found in the stories of Joshua's march around the city of Jericho, Moses' calling the tribes of Israel together and Absalom's secret messages.
