Pharaoh had a dream where seven fat cows came out of the River Nile and started grazing among the reeds. They were followed by seven thin cows which ate the fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up (see Sarah for image of Pharaoh).

Pharaoh had a second dream where he saw seven healthy heads of grain on a single stalk. Pharaoh woke and called for his advisors who could not explain the meaning of the dreams. The Royal Butler remembered Joseph in jail so Pharaoh summoned Joseph to the palace. Joseph explained that the cattle and grain both represented seven years of good harvest followed by seven years of famine.

Joseph advised Pharaoh that, during the good years, he should store up grain to feed the people through the famine. Pharaoh was so impressed by Joseph that he made him Governor and put him in charge of the whole project. He gave Joseph a ring from his own finger, and a special uniform with a gold chain of office. Joseph the slave became second-in-command of Egypt.

Joseph travelled throughout the land collecting the harvest and storing the grain. When the famine came, Joseph opened the storerooms and sold grain to the Egyptians. As the famine spread, people came from other countries to buy food. This included Joseph's family from Canaan (see Benjamin).
