David

  • David was Jesse’s youngest son and had seven older brothers.  David would grow up to become a talented musician and songwriter, a mighty warrior and a powerful king.
  • This part of David’s story is found in the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 16, verses 1 to 13.

Lion

  • David was a shepherd boy who looked after his dad’s sheep.  There were many wild animals in the hills to protect the flock from.  One day he had to fight off a lion; and on another occasion a bear. 
  • This part of David’s story is found in the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 17, verses 32 to 37.
  • Lions can also be found in the stories of Samson’s riddle about honey and Daniel in the lions’ den. Bears are found in the story of Elisha's bald head.

Stones and sling

  • David chose not to use Saul’s armour to fight Goliath as it was too heavy.  Instead he picked five smooth stones from the river to fire from his sling.
  • This part of David’s story is found in the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 17, verses 38 to 40.
  • Stones can also be found in the stories of Jesus’ tomb, Daniels and the lions' den and the cruel death of both Achan and Stephen.

Goliath

  • Goliath was an enormous Philistine champion who challenged the Israelite soldiers to a fight. The Philistines were enemies of the Israelites. When little David appeared, Goliath made fun of him. David fired a stone from his sling which struck Goliath on the forehead and killed him.  David then took Goliath’s sword and chopped his head off.
  • This part of David’s story is found in the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 17, verses 41 to 58.
  • Warrior soldiers are also be found in the stories of Joshua's conquest of the Promised Land and Gideon's selective army of 300.
  • Goliath appears in our Babble.on, Ballyhoo! and Numbers games.
