Benjamin

  • Benjamin was the youngest of Jacob's 13 children. He had 11 older brothers and one sister. Benjamin was Rachel's second son and Joseph's full brother but, sadly, she died after giving birth to him. For this reason, he was very precious to his dad Jacob.
  • This part of Benjamin's story is found in Genesis, chapter 35, verses 16 to 27.

Grain

  • During the great famine, Jacob sent his 10 oldest sons from Canaan to Egypt to buy grain. They did not know that Joseph was Governor of the country. Although Joseph recognised his brothers, they did not recognise him. Joseph accused them of being spies. The brothers denied it but Joseph had them locked up.
  • This part of Benjamin's story is found ion Genesis, chapter 42, verses 1 to 17.
  • Grain is also found in the stories of Gideon in the threshing room, Ruth gleaning in Boaz's fields and Jesus' parable of the sower.

Coins

  • Benjamin's brother Simeon was kept as a hostage while the others were allowed to return home with a promise to come back with Benjamin. Joseph hid their money in the top of their grain sacks. The brothers panicked when they found the money. When they went back to Egypt to buy more grain they brought extra money and gifts to repay Governor Joseph.
  • This part of Benjamin's story is found in Genesis, chapter 42, verse 18 to chapter 43, verse 32.

Cup

  • Joseph instructed his steward to put the brothers' money back in their sacks, and his silver cup in Benjamin's sack. When they left to go home, they were arrested for theft. Joseph questioned them about their father before revealing who he really was. They were delighted to discover that Joseph was alive. Joseph sent for his dad and the whole family was reunited in Egypt.
